6 October 2019

One probable STREAKED REED WARBLER, Shunyi Patch (TT).

Description: flushed from tall grass and seen in flight with the naked eye as it called once (a soft ‘tack’ similar to Black-browed but more monotone and less like two stones banging together). It flew around 10m in good light before dropping in to the base of the grass stems. Small size (similar to Black-browed Reed Warbler, but significantly paler with obvious dark streaking and a darker rump). Colouration similar to the grass seed heads. Waited patiently for almost an hour with no sign. Began to work my way around the edge of the habitat, just 2-3m away from where it went down but as I did so, the bird flew again from behind me, over my shoulder and, again, flew around 10m in front in good light before dropping into deep cover. Again, with the naked eye I could clearly see a small pale warbler with dark streaking on the upperparts. This time, after it went to ground, I could see some movement of the stems as it made its way to the east. I took a few steps to my right so that the light was behind me. It edged towards a gap and I had my camera ready but it never reached the gap, instead turned around and headed back from where it came. It called several times in the next few minutes. I did not have my sound recording equipment with me but tried to make a recording on my iPhone (not yet analysed). The call was not as loud as the Black-browed Reed Warblers occasionally calling in the same area and was less obviously like two stones banging together. One would need to be close to hear it at all. After a few minutes, the movement stopped and so did the vocalisations. I waited for another hour with no sign before walking towards the area where it had been. There was no sign and, reluctantly, I left the site around 1245 as I had an appointment. Given my experience of any potential confusion species (Black-browed Reed Warbler, Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler) I can say with confidence that this bird was neither. I am confident that the bird I saw was a Streaked Reed Warbler, however without seeing the bird with binoculars and still, no photo or decent sound recording, I must describe it as a “probable”.

The habitat where the probable STREAKED REED WARBLER was found.

5 October 2019

1 GREAT TIT (Parus major), Wenyu River (SB).

An incredible record.  Steve comments as follows:

“Following a flat tyre, I was pushing my bike along the road that runs parallel with the Wenyu river, just to the north of the private road to the Beijing Lafayette Hotel. About 400 yards past the entrance, I heard a loud and familiar “tea-cher” call (familiar, that is, when in the UK). I quickly located the bird and was delighted to see that it was what I thought it might be – a Great Tit. In the minute or so that it was in view, I noted the following: Rich yellow underparts with wide ‘central’ black band, extending from extensive black throat to the under tail coverts. Black cap, white cheeks, bordered by black necklace continuing to throat and upper breast. Prominent white-bar on greater coverts, contrasted with green mantle.
I waited in the area for 30 minutes or so, but no further sign of the bird after the initial sighting.”
