HEBEI: At least 71 ASIAN DOWITCHERS at Nanpu, near Tangshan (TT, PA, LM); huge numbers of shorebirds present (we estimated 70-80,000 birds and saw 33 different wader species).  Colour-flagged birds included a RED KNOT, 3 RED-NECKED STINTS and 2 BAR-TAILED GODWITS.

1 near-adult LONG-TAILED SKUA, Shahe Reservoir (Colm Moore).  The first documented record of a skua, of any description, in Beijing (!) and, as far as we know, the first skua seen by an Irishman anywhere in China! An exceptional record.  Plus 7 BAR-TAILED GODWITS (only Beijing’s 2nd record of this species following the first seen by Jan-Erik Nilsen at Miyun on 14 March this year).  Both sightings coincided with the beginning of heavy rain from 0500-1400.

    Jesper Honskov put me on to your blog – very nice work! The baer’s had me spilling my coffee in envy! I’m an Irish birder and I will be in Beijing from the afternoon of 7 may to late evening 11th May next. I’ll be with Jesper in Manchuria before that and I am interested in using the 4 days afterwards to look for elisa’s flycatcher and grey sided thrush in Wulingshan.
